10 winter mocktails to get you through Dry January

With the temperature finally starting to dip into single digits in Hong Kong, we’re still clinging on to the thought of white Christmas, presents by the tree, and warming our toes by the fireplace. Of course, if you’re like us, you spent the better part of the past month engaged in heavy imbibing, and it’s about time for a (brief but necessary) break. If you’re set on doing Dry January, these winter mocktails will take you right through the dry spell until it’s time to break out the liquor bottles again. Here are 10 of our favourites around town right now.

Fresh Water at The Envoy

Evoking a lush tropical rainforest, the Fresh Water mocktail (HK$108) at renowned bar The Envoy is a refreshing kick-off to the new year with elderflower cordial paired with homemade thyme syrup, yuzu juice and soda water. If you’re looking for a punchy pick-me-up, this one’s for you.

Choco Ginger Bliss at nood food

Bunker down in the cold weather courtesy of nood food’s Choco Ginger Bliss (HK$68), a smooth and silky take on everyone’s favourite winter drink, hot chocolate. Blended with organic cacao, dates, coconut, almond butter and ginger, the slightly spicy concoction will go down a treat after a revitalising workout at the adjacent PURE gym.

Tea Rosa at Quinary

Inspired by a botanical garden, Quinary’s elegant Tea Rosa (HK$110) hits the perfect balance of sweet to tart, splashed with lemon juice and topped up with soda water. Fizzy and floral, you’ll hardly miss the alcohol as you’re savouring each sip of the rosy-hued drink.

KGB at Origin

What’s more appropriate for cold weather nights than taking a long, hot soak in the tub? Reflecting the gin bar’s cheeky and playful spirit, the KGB (“Kyoho Grape Bathtub”, HK$108) has long been a bestseller at Origin — spiked or not — with the grape juice and elderflower concoction served in a bubble tea bath, complete with a yellow rubber ducky on the side.

Citrus Mocktail at Brick Lane

Soothe your soul with the Citrus Mocktail (HK$68) served at all-day diner Brick Lane, one of our go-to spots for a hearty British breakfast on Hong Kong Island. The mix of Earl Grey tea, orange, ginger and spices is sure to warm you up from the inside out.

Yum Cha at Fu Lou Shou

Duck into hidden bar Fu Lou Shou for a winter warmer in the form of the Yum Cha (HK$78), which is served in a traditional red Chinese ceramic mug. Crafted with the same attention to balance and quality ingredients as Fu Lou Shou’s expertly made cocktails, the Yum Cha starts with the sweet properties of homemade red date tea offset by tart lemon juice and splashes of passionfruit and elderflower syrup.

Mariposa at Angel's Share

Don’t let its girly appearance fool you: The Mariposa (HK$88) at whisky bar Angel’s Share is full of depth and flavour — a homemade sangria reduction mixed with bergamot puree with roundness from roasted hazelnut syrup and acidity from balsamic vinegar. It’s topped off with a whimsical chocolate butterfly for a ‘gram-worthy virgin drink.

Longan Nahm at Chachawan

Two of our favourite winter ingredients, ginger and red dates, come together in the Longan Nahm Mocktail (HK$50) at Chachawan. The remedying drink is exactly what the doctor prescribed, buoyed by the detoxifying properties of ginger and the loaded essential vitamins and minerals of red dates.

The Palermo at Buenos Aires Polo Club

We love stopping by Buenos Aires Polo Club anytime we’re in need of a stiff, well-made drink (we particularly adore the Mi Gran Cigarro); but this month we’ll be ditching the booze in favour of The Palermo, an expertly shaken mocktail brightened with fresh raspberry juice and topped off with a creamy egg white cap. The elegant sipper is the perfect cure for those still battling the effects of holiday excess.
