6 wearable makeup trends for the holiday season

The holiday season, with all its functions and social commitments, is prime time to amp up your beauty routine and experiment with makeup looks. What else did you spend your Christmas shopping sesh on if not to pick up a few essentials for yourself, anyway? You can put your new finds to good use with all the scintillating makeup trends popping up in fashion shows and on Instagram feeds lately. Whether it’s dark and glamorous or minimalistic and cool — it’s all about figuring out how to translate the trend to a more wearable look, rather than simply working for the runway. So go forth and experiment with our favourite makeup trends for the holiday season below.

1) Retro Alien Princess

We are absolutely captivated by the weird and wonderfully retro trend inspired by recent runway looks from the likes of Anna Sui (Pat McGrath) and Chanel (Tom Pecheux) that channels 60s wide-eyed looks, 80s new romance, and is punk and feminine all at once. You don’t have to go full Siouxie Sioux on your eyelids either. It’s all about amping up certain features with unusual, otherworldly accents.

Over-emphasize your natural contours such as brow bones, eye sockets and frame it with an 80s strong brow, while adding dramatic dark liner and lashes. Sweep everything upwards to add authority — from cheeks to sharp cat-eyes. Add edginess and ethereal glow using purply galaxy hues as highlight, and make your lids pop with trending shades such as ultraviolet and lots of festive shimmer. A neutral smokey eye with a vinyl, wet finish on the lids using lipgloss or balm is also an alternative to glitter, creating avant-garde texture instead. With all this drama around the eyes, a soft pink, neutral or brown lip will suffice.

2) Glitter Lips

What usually comes to mind after you hear someone suggesting “glitter lips” is “how am I going to eat and drink?” The answer is to use the tiniest flecks of shimmer pigment (or just purchase a glitter lip product). Makeup Forever’s Star Lit Powder is pretty much made for both eyes and lips that need a glittery accent. You could go full glitter, but if you’re wary, just dab a little glitter or shimmer gloss on the middle of your pout or brush a subtle outline on your cupid’s bow. Mix any glitter pigment with a setting spray before painting on so it lasts all night. For a cooler and more subtle take, look for lipsticks with metallic finishes such as Dior Rouge’s Poison Metal — a metallic oxblood shade — or Tom Ford’s Isamaya from its Girls line, which has blue flecks of glitter in a sheer lip that you can layer on anything. Still unconvinced by the flecks? Opt for a sheer diamond gloss such as MAC’s Dazzleglass for a subtle but unignorable shine.

3) Copper Tones

The trending burnt orange makeup colour of the year makes nude look fresh and funky, and plus it works universally across all skin tones. Varying from shimmery coral tones to burnt orange to spicy browns to burgundies, the warm palette works for hot or chilly weather alike. It’s also relatively natural-looking, great for those who want to experiment with their eye makeup but don’t want to jump too far from the fray. Try a romantic smokey look using single shades, and add a small highlight with a gold shimmer at the inner corner of your eye. Pair these luxurious oranges and browns with subtle peachy cheeks and 90s brown or neutral lips to complete the look.

4) Geometric Liner

At Prabal Gurung, models stole the show with razor-sharp streaks of colour on the lids instead of standard eyeliner and shadow (shown here in the bottom row); with similar looks popping up at Versace and Byblos (image 4 above) with accent colours, floating wings and creases in a rainbow array of bright neon shades and metallics. With a steady hand, these looks are easily replicated — just pick your favourite colour and line away. One neat trick is to blend from a bright colour liner into a sharp black wing with an ombre effect. Best of all, these work for everyone, no matter if you have deep set eyes or monolids. Keep the lines simple, too — you don’t want to go overboard and end up looking like the Hamburglar.

5) Classic Red Lips and Big Lashes

Classic glamour is always in style especially for a festive season like Christmastime. Play up your lashes but keep the shadow to a minimum, to give the spotlight to your precisely drawn pucker. Instead of the traditional red, you can also try a new bold lip colour like vermillion, magenta, fuchsia, retro browns, or even the 2018 Pantone shade, ultraviolet.

6) The New Au Naturel

“No makeup makeup” is always in style. If you’re looking to let your outfit shine for itself, you might want to indulge in luscious glowy “bare” skin, defined arches and natural pinkish lips. The base and highlight is key here, so don’t skimp on good hydration, sunscreen and primer, as well as a poppin’ highlighter to keep your skin looking flawless.
